Research The Non-zero-sum Effects While The Public Arts Getting Involved In Functional Spaces

As the essence of the architecture,“function” has many definitions.①However,because the explication of space in construction is very abundant and active, therefore,the definition of the space in construction is enriching and its extension of its meaningis expanding all the time. When “space” meets with the prefix “public”, the traditionalmeaning of space begin to inject with the modern definition of space which isdemocracy, open-minded communicative and sharing②; When “arts” meets with theprefix “public”, the pattern of “space” is being marked with “space spirit”.Public-space-art, no doubt among them,“public” endows the modern meaning of“space” and “art”, while the combination on the basis of “space” and “art” gives birthto the public art. Hence, the process of art intervening with space represents thepattern of public art, for which the essential meaning is forming and injecting certainkind of “space spirit” to the functional space. In the other hand, when form thefunctional space of landscape by intervening by arts to create some certain of “spacespirit” of public atmosphere, there exists a problem that is how to fully solve thecontradiction between them. The purpose of functional space is to use the space to amaximum extent, in the mean time, the intervention of arts strengthens its effect whileis likely to weaken the function of the space and vice versa. Can the combinationbetween the space and the art be achieved through a complementary harmoniouscombination? In another word, how to achieve the win-win solution of non-zero-sumeffect? In fact, this paper probes into and makes researches on those problems, whichare also the drive of the original intention and direction of this paper.This paper consists five parts: Introduction; Public Space and Art Intervention;Zero-sum Effect and Non-zero-sum Effect of Art Intervention; Win-win Results of Artand Function Combination; Conclusion. The introduction describes the purpose, significance and methods of this paper, the current situation, difficulties andinnovations; The second part makes explanations on the communality of space andarts and their combination modes, characteristics and methods by the gestalt theory. Itis considered that the art intervention based on function property is the experiencingsensor between human and the outside world. Its final goal is to create certain “spacespirit” of public atmosphere; The third part focuses on analyzing the contradictionbetween functional space and art intervention and the methods to achieve the harmonyof non-zero-sum effect. And the way to achieve the win-win solution is to strengthenthe site survey, public opinion survey and scientific study. The fourth part makesfeasibility analyses and conceptual prospect on the traditional model, successful casesand integration mode of the combination of art and functional space. And the prospect–art for living, is the win-win result of non-zero-sum effect of art intervening withfunctional space; The final part is the conclusion, which makes summarization ofresearch results and states the redefinition of the theory and value of the artintervening with functional space, in order to explore a kind of feasible mode forpublic art practicing and to make certain contribution for the deepening and spread ofour national public art theory system.
