Under the rapid progress of city in China, people have experienced a largechange of life style, continuous expanding urban scale and increasing number of carownership. In this case, architecture form began to respond to the changes.Meanwhile, commercial complex exists as a symbol of city phenomenon such aseconomic acceleration and maturity of urbanization. Exterior space of commercialcomplex is not only basic public space of architecture, but also transition spacewhich connects outdoor traffic with interior space to lead people stream and trafficstream, integrate business and exterior/interior space. Thus, exterior space ofcommercial complex belongs to both the city and the commercial complex.Referring to the design of exterior space, it asked for the combination of all thecomposes of urban systems especially urban traffic. In the beginning, the concept and feature of exterior space of commercialcomplex and urban traffic are defined and analyzed generally. Based on theresearch and practice what researchers did before, the thesis compares pros andcons applied during the combination process. According to the consists of exteriorspace and space form, exterior space of commercial complex is divided into squarespace and street space. The influence of urban traffic on exterior space is analyzedfrom four factors of urban traffic which are road, transportation modes, transportation streams and people’s activities. Within the examples and data, itconcludes that exterior space of commercial complex is provided with properties ofintegrity, accessibility, coherence and experience. Moreover a specific example,Aqua City in Nanjing is discussed to reflect the strategy of exterior space ofcommercial complex. In a word, as a high density and compound architecture it isbetter to keep pace with social development, so that the exterior space ofcommercial complex based on the desire of people would be achieved.
