With the development of social economy of our country, the power system load growsrapidly, and at the same time the peak-valley difference of the power system is more andmore large, the problem of peak modulation is increasingly serious. Using each type of powerunits start-stop peak modulation is the main way to solve the peaking problem, and theenergy consumption in this process caused an increasing proportion of each units. Reducingthe start-stop peaking caused by consumption is the current hot research directions. In thispaper, the energy loss of power units in the process of start-stop peak modulation was thestarting point of the analysis.According to the proportion in power system and distribution by the region, the paperanalyzed the coal-fired thermal power units, pumped storage units, gas-fired thermal powerunits. First of all, the paper mainly described the start-stop energy consumption of thecoal-fired thermal power units in the different stages. According to the loss ratio, deduced theenergy loss calculation by adopting linear factor method, and built the coal-fired thermalpower unit start-stop energy consumption calculation model of peak shaving. Second,analyzed the pumped storage units energy consumption of the start-stop peak shaving process,and then deduced the calculation model of the pumping condition and power generatingcondition. Finally, compared the energy loss of the coal-fired thermal power units and thepumped storage units in the peak modulation. In the process of the calculation, it adopted theequivalent method on the basis of the static and the equivalent substitution method fordynamic analysis.From the calculation of the above, we known that the pumped storage units have coalsaving benefits and environmental benefits, and it can improve the operation stability of thecoal-fired thermal power units in the power system at the same time. It’s performance is betterthan that of coal-fired thermal power units. In the process of equivalent substitution method,the paper adopted the genetic algorithm based on MATLAB, and improved the generatingmethod of initial population, dispensed penalty function in the process of computing. Inaddition, the peak modulation performance of the gas thermal power units between thepumped storage units and the coal-fired thermal power. The gas thermal power units and thepumped storage units can complement each other by geographical distribution,they were theideal power units of the peak modulation in power system.
