Residential building has been the earliest type of structure in human history, it is also the type which been largely built. The interior design and decoration, which has direct relation to the physical factors such as the building’s construction structure, material property, and making technic, is also acting as the carrier of culture factors like history, architecture, design style, folk culture.Gansu province is a multi-nation place where different culture merger and exchange, and it is also a stop along the ancient Silk Road. Base on the fact that Gansu serve as a interlink between inland China and northwest region (central Asia), there has been less influence on the traditional architecture from the many Chinese dynasties, nevertheless, religions’cultures and customers lays heavy impact; A wide rage of folk decorations has been used on the traditional Gansu residential buildings, where they have made noticeable artistic achievements. All those mentioned above provide enormous materials for culture, traditions, Silk Road history and language studies, which absolutely holds critical role in the Chinese traditional architecture development.This paper investigate Ruianbao in Wuwei and Hushiminju in Tianshui as comparable, for they are all regions in Gansu province along the Silk Road, as those two regions Wuwei and Tianshui are relative different between their customer, geography and climate condition, also because they are typical representative of the local folk culture. Writer starts and develops from vertical and horizontal aspects, by the development and changes of history, the paper studies the source, start, and development of local traditional interior decoration. Studies been proceed based on the subject’s historic background, the changes it went through, and question the future problems based on current issues. Through the studies on Wuwei and Tianshui region along with the analysis on the related building material, form, culture topic, art, etc., the paper aim to extract the value, pattern, and meaning behind those decorations, also to further research on how to cope the problem in the way and laws which helps to find balance between traditional and modern design. The destination of this study is not just to concentrate on the decoration itself but the search for traditional idea of integrating aesthetic, philosophy, environment, culture, and use this idea to serve today’s design...
