Urban roads as infrastructure of the city transport, it’s convenient for urban inhab-itants’live, work and culture entertainment, whose running state and efficiency have attracted more and more attention. Because of the unbalanced development of the city, the developed and matured areas often have more traffic flow and people flow, while other areas have less the traffic flow and people flow. This situation makes the spatial distribution of urban traffic state different. People have different travel remand in different time makes the temporal distribution of urban traffic state is also different. So how to acquire and master the spatial and temporal distribution of urban traffic state is more and more concerned by traveler and traffic planning managers. With the development of GPS positioning technology, wireless location and transmission technology, makes the traffic information collection more efficient and broader. It provides traffic information collection technology based floating car to study the spatial and temporal distribution of urban traffic state.This paper takes the GPS Floating Car data and road network data as an example to study the spatial and temporal distribution of Kunming traffic state.Firstly, data pre-processing and map matching. Based on the analyzing charac-teristics of GPS floating car data, the paper preprocesses the data to eliminate the data which influence accuracy of the traffic parameter extraction, transforms the floating car data coordinate into the city coordinate, and makes the floating car data match to the appropriate road by map matching.Secondly, traffic parameter extraction and road traffic state classification. This paper reviews and summarizes the method and model of GPS floating car data based the road traffic parameters estimation average link travel speed illuminates methods of using floating car data extracts average link travel speed and estab-lishes evaluation index system of traffic state, and then road traffic state classifies based on the average link travel speed and classification standards.Thirdly, study of spatial and temporal distribution of traffic state. According to the spatial and temporal properties of urban traffic state, this paper builds spatial and temporal database of Kunming traffic state and achieves a dynamic visualization of the spatial and temporal data in ArcGIS10.1platform. Based on the spatial and temporal database and evaluation index system of traffic state, this paper studies the spatial and temporal distribution of Kunming traffic state and obtains some valid conclusions.Finally, this dissertation is summarized; we prospect and point out the limita-tions of the research and the future research.
