With the development of smart power grids, the formation of EHV/UHV power grid andvariation of the load, the charge capacity of transmission line to the ground is growing rapidly.The bad influences such as terminal voltage rise, power loss increase and the power frequencyovervoltage will be brought by capacitive reactive power when the load is light. Nowadays,the reactive power source which can be regulated quickly and smoothly becomes the key toresolve the problem of reactive and voltage.MCSR can be regulated from rated value to zero with the increase of transmission power.And its capacity will sharply increase when the circuit transient process emerges in the line,so the problem such as switching overvoltage, grid losses, power quality and stability ofpower system can be effectively resolved.The basic structure and working principle of MCSR are detailed,and its workingcharacteristics are analyzed by the means of numerical calculation. Based on theelectromagnetic equation of MCSR, the equivalent physical model is derived. Then thesketchy form of MCSR and its equivalent circuit are deduced by introducing the concept ofequivalent current.According to the equivalent circuit, a model of MCSR is established under theMATLAB simulation platform, and the parameters of saturated transformer in the simulationmodel are calculated and simulation results are analyzed. For getting the physical parametersof operated brake pipe and the diode, a model of MCSR is built according to the originalstructure of saturated transformer and multiple winding transformer models which areprovided by MATLAB, similarly, parameter calculation and simulation analysis have beendone. Lastly, the simulation results of two kinds of modeling methods were compared.A single-phase lossless transmission line is used as an example, in this case, therelationship among the line voltage, transmission power, compensating capacity and linelength is analyzed. Also, the voltage control system of MCSR is designed based on thedynamic reactive power compensation principle and engineering design method, then thesimulation results are analyzed.For the case of the DC bias, the response time of MCSR is longer. Then the threemethods which can speed up the transition process of MCSR are proposed, and each of themis analyzed carefully, all the three methods are effective, and it should be chosen according tothe actual situations.
