Railway bridge is the national economic main artery and lifeline engineering of nation’slivelihood. As the substructure of bridge, piles are more easily destroyed under the earthquakeforce, and once the destructive earthquake comes, relief work and the smooth transportationof relief supplies would surely be affected, which would cause greater losses to people’s lifeand property. Due to the restriction of history and economic condition, there still exists a largequantity of gravity bridge piers with low reinforcement rate in high intensity areas. Followingthe issue of the Railway Engineering Anti-earthquake Design Specification GB50111—2006,the piles above cannot satisfied with the new code anymore and it has been an urgent issue tostudy the failure mechanism and the fast repair after damage of the pile. In this paper, specificworks are done in following:1. Domestic and international seismic performance and seismic strengthening research ofrailway gravity bridge pier is concluded after the massive reference of relative document anddata.2. The original piles, the phenomenon and feature of experimental failure of the damagedpiers strengthened by gluing steels piles are described in detail. The skeleton curves,hysteretic curves, load degradation curves, stiffness degradation and energy-dissipatingcapacity of piles before and after the test are compared and analyzed elaborately.3. Combining with the quasi static test, seismic retrofitting measure and method aredesigned for this kind of piles, construction techniques of the retrofitting measure is putforward accordingly.4. In accordance with the test, simplified calculation formulae for this kind of gluingsteels piles are presented, including height calculation for strengthening steel plate, numbersand embedded depth calculation for connecting anchor bars of strengthening angel steel andthat of strengthening angel steel and pier body.5. Prototype bridge pier is created and push-over analysis is applied on the strengthenedpile utilizing MIDAS/Civil2010, evaluating anti-seismic performance of the pier under rareearthquake intensity.
