Automated manual transmission (AMT) adds automatic manipulating mechanism to thetraditional manual transmission (MT). The key component of AMT system is the automaticclutch, and the control quality of clutch directly determines the start and shift performance ofAMT system, and even affects the whole vehicle’s performance. Especially in the startingprocess of the vehicle, the control of clutch becomes particularly important. Therefore, theresearch of the control technology of clutch is significant. The main contents of the paper areas follows.Firstly, the basic structure and work principle of AMT system were introduced, the keyissue about clutch control in AMT system was pointed out, and the importance of clutchcontrol during the start process of AMT vehicle was explained. Secondly, the loadcharacteristics of the diaphragm spring clutch, and especially the characteristics of the clutchtorque transmission, were introduced. Furthermore, the dynamics of start process of AMTvehicle was analyzed, especially, the evaluation indices of start performance including shiftjerk and friction work, were described in detail. The optimal PID algorithm for the engagement speed of clutch during start process, which uses the performance of ITAE as objective function, was put forward. The startingsimulation system of AMT is established using Matlab/Simulink that consists of enginesimulation module, vehicle longitudinal dynamics simulation module, clutch engagingprocess simulation module and the simulation module of the diaphragm spring torque. Thestart processes with small, medium and large throttle opening were simulated. The simulationresults show that the proposed PID algorithm could acquire good start performance atdifferent throttle opening.
