Construction closure and diversion of water conservancy project construction, especially in the construction of the gate dam project is the specific engineering measures. The project of diversion closure is temporary works of the project, which plays a critical role on the river flow control in the construction of water conservancy project. The numerical simulation of the closure and diversion has always been very hot topic in the engineering fluid mechanics in recent years. With the improved computing power, there has been a rapid development on the numerical simulation of closure and diversion. The use of numerical simulation techniques to study the closure and diversion of construction is the direction of future research in the engineering fluid mechanics. The finite element method (FVM) is commonly used in fluid mechanics, which is a numerical calculation method. It has the advantage that is having flexible mesh, easy to handle irregular boundaries. Therefore, compared with other numerical methods, the finite element method is more suitable for the simulation of complex boundary conditions of closure and diversion. This paper describes the basic principles of the finite element and the process of numerical simulation and takes the Fengyichang hydro-junction in Jialing River as an example to use the theory. Two-dimensional flow models have been built to model the flow pattern during the closure and diversion of river flow. The simulation results are used to study on the problem of discharge capacity, navigable flow conditions, the flow pattern of cofferdam area and the hydro elements of closure gap, which accord with the ones of physical modeling. As a result, the mathematical models of closure and diversion established in this paper are feasible.
