Two codes for this connection design project are introduced, including AISC360-10, NBR8800:2008. Furthermore, GB50017-2003is correspondingly illustrated. Acomparative analysis is done to these three specifications,telling the differences amongthem. The three codes are discussed in the aspects of limit states design method,material, strength, behavior and computation of the common bolt and high strength bolt,detailing requirements, computation of the groove weld, fillet weld, tensile strength andcompressive strength of the connecting element and connecting element subject tocombined tension and shear,etc.Calculations on beam to gird shear connection,beam to column end-plateconnection and vertical brace connection are done by meeting the requirements ofNBR8800and AISC360.Additionally, AISC manual takes as a reference. Focus onformula derivation of prying force,yield line theory applying on determining thethickness of the end plate when the prying action is assumed to be adequatelyconsidered, and the uniform force method used in designing vertical braceconnection.Correspondingly,these three typical connections shall be designed meetingthe requirements of GB50017. With the two different results, comparative analysiscould be done.The results reveal that there is not any rigorous calculation on pryingforce,which make the tension force in bolt much conservative, on the condition that theconnecting element is stiff enough. So the prying force reduction coefficient ought to beenhanced. There are two ways of yield line theory on calculating the bending strength of end plate, one is energy method, the other is equilibrium method. AISC uses the formerone, which need not to consider prying force, it is more convenient than equilibriummethod what our CECS applies.Uniform force method which applied by AISC manualis much more accurate and economical than what we domestic way so called simplifiedmethod.At last,a series of suggestions could be taken to revise the current GB50017basedon the comparative analysis above,which will be a good reference to our designers.andit sure does make sense.
