The climate shows a characteristic that extreme weathers occur a lot all aroundthe globe, with the aero development on higher speed and more frequent flights. Theflight delay and aviation accident happen frequently in view of the negative effect ofawful weather condition, and thus the hail impact has become a new challengethreatening flights increasingly. In recent years, China’s engineering experiment andcomputer simulation for the hail impact are still at its preliminary stage, and the finiteelement simulation of the hail impact using ABAQUS has proved to be a powerfulresolution for anti-collision out of its economy, efficiency and other merits. In this paper, the hail-impact events were illustrated during the past50years,from which the accidental characteristics were described and research methodssummarized, on this basis, a finite element simulation dependent on ABAQUS wasdeveloped. This paper exhibited the components of ABAQUS software and itsoperation procedure, completely discussed elastic-plasticity, elastic-plastic dynamics,collision-contact and other theories, numerical solutions, as well as relevantapplications in ABAQUS, studied the mechanical behavior of hail, summed up thedefinition of strain rate dependent material model, concluded the constitutive modeland failure model based on ABAQUS. Then the simulations for different casesconcerning to grain size, velocity, impact angle and eccentricity factor had beencarried out and the result and compared with test conclusionswas analyzed. The comparisons with the test conclusions indicate that the finite elementsimulation for hail-impact dependent on ABAQUS can reflect the hail impact andcommonly be available for this research. A fundamental result of characteristics andlaws has been detected by the simulations for different cases. Thus valuablereferences for a further study can be provided.
