In asphalt pavement, the presence of water is the external factors affecting the useperformance of asphalt pavement. Asphalt and mineral aggregate of adhesion is the intrinsicfactor. Under the effect of internal and external factors, the water damage has a greatinfluence on the life and property. The water damage has become one of the main form ofpavement damage. The stand or fall of asphalt and mineral aggregate adhesive seriouslyaffects the water damage of asphalt pavement. Many researchers have some achievements tostudy adhesion of asphalt and mineral aggregate in using a lot of methods. And on theapplication of the theory of surface energy of asphalt and mineral aggregate adhesive researchfrom microscopic energy has attracted wide attention. In this paper, surface energy theory isselected to study the adhesion of asphalt and mineral aggregate.First of all, interface interaction principle and basic properties of asphalt and mineralaggregate are introduced. And their influence on adhesion and important aspects of asphaltmixture water stability are analyzed. Asphalt acid or alkaline and the surface of the mineralaggregate structure on adhesive plays a main role. At the same time, the effects on interfacealso play a bigger role.Secondly, through the several means of basic theory of adhesion, the asphalt and mineralaggregate in the process of adhesion forces generated by the contribution to the adhesive sizeare analyzed. The present adhesion test methods at home and abroad are introduced. Adhesiveand water stability of asphalt and mineral aggregate of the influence factors is summed up.Some suggestions and measures to improve adhesion are putted forward. The test methods ofwater stability of asphalt mixture are briefly introduced. It is difficult for these methods inevaluating the stability of water at the same time. It proves that the asphalt and mineralaggregate is good or bad from the side. It is carried out on the many kinds of asphalt andmineral aggregate adhesion test using the method of boiled experiment. The related factorsinfluencing boiled experiment method and conclusion are verified. Finally, according to theory of surface energy, the wettability and adhesion process isanalyzed. The surface energy can vary between different interfaces, especially to the surfaceof the solid liquid interface changes. Based on the theory of Owens-Wendt, the contact anglemethod is chosen for evaluating five kinds of modified asphalt and three kinds of mineralaggregate surface energy.The two-phase system adhesion work evaluating adhesion of asphaltand mineral aggregate and the adhesion of three-phase system under the presence of water isestablished.
