As an extreme experimental condition, high magnetic field is an important tool forscientific research, especially for new disciplines. Long pulse magnetic field combines theadvantages of pulsed magnetic field and continuous magnetic field. It can expand theapplication of high magnetic field in scientific research. Wuhan National High MagneticField Centre (WHMFC) have developed a pulsed power supply system using batterybanks as energy storage components to achieve pulsed flat-top magnetic field of40T.Energy storage component and switching device are important parts of the wholepulsed power supply facility. The commonly used power supply facility are capacitorbanks and pulsed generators. However, none of them is the ideal power supply for longpulse magnetic field. This paper propose a method using battery banks as the powersupply for long pulse magnetic field. As for the choosing of the switch, considering theamount of the discharging current and discharging time are both very huge, in order toensure the safety and reliability of the power system, we have used thyristor switch as themain swich and DC opening switch as the protecting switch.This paper introduces the structure and working principle of the battery bank powersupply., analyzes the working principle of the thyristor switch and its reliable shut-offconditions, builds the simulation model using Matlab/Simulink to verify the results ofanalysis. This paper also analyzes the arcing principle of the two DC opening switch asthe protection switch and makes them to reality, and makes some plan of the backupprotection debugging according to different situations.In order to ensure the reliability of the system, test experiments are carried on beforebeing put into operation. In this paper, a series test experiments are designed and carriedon. And now, we have verified the reliable shut-off conditions and its opening capability,the current sharing ability of the thyristor switch and the reliability of the protection switch. After this, we test the whole power supply system and realize the pulsed flat-topmagnetic field of32T.As the current rising time of the power supply system is too long, the maximumcurrent is not high enough. This paper then propose to combine the method to combinebattery bank with capacitor bank to shorten the current rising time, and uses a BUCKbypass to the magnet to improve the flat top. Introduce their working principles andverifies their functions by simulation.
