Cantilever retaining, which is widely used in foundation pit supporting engineering, willbe affected by side friction created by the pressure from the soil both inside and outside. Thedistribution of side friction on cantilever retaining structure’s stability was studied in thisarticle through finite element analysis software. The influence on the stability of cantileverretaining structure caused by side friction in different excavation depth was also givenquantitatively.The main works have been done as follows:(1)The numerical model of foundation pitwith cantilever retaining was established.(2)The influence on the stability of cantileverretaining structure caused by side friction in different excavation depth was givenquantitatively.(3)The distribution of side friction on cantilever retaining structure was givenbased on results from3D numerical model of homogeneous soil. The three-dimensional effectwas also discussed comparing with results from2D numerical model.(4)According to thecalculation results of3D numerical model, the distribution of side friction in layered soil wasdiscussed.(5)The influence on the stability of cantilever retaining structure in homogeneoussoil caused by side friction was given quantitatively using formula fitting.(6)A simulationaccording to a certain practical case was done and the influence on the stability of retainingstructure caused by side friction in this case was given.The conclusion shows that the distribution of side friction on cantilever retainingstructure has three-dimensional effect. Layered soil has similar side friction curve withhomogeneous soil. The side friction on cantilever retaining structure improves its stability,and the proportion of the fixed effect due to side friction increases with the excavation offoundation pit.
