In recent years, some field studies have been conducted on indoor thermalenvironment and thermal comfort in urban residential buildings, a few on rural houses.Compared with the city residents, both the living habits, economic level of peasants andthermal environment characteristics are different. The conclusions of the thermalcomfort study of urban residential building are not applicable in rural houses. Therefore,it is necessary to study on indoor thermal environment and thermal comfort at ruralhouses in China. In order to study indoor thermal environment and thermal comfort at rural housesand urban residential buildings in severe cold region in winter, a long-term tracking testwas carried out at10rural houses near Harbin and10apartments in Harbin. Airtemperature and relative humidity was tested by continuous monitoring. The otherenvironmental parameters were tested when we entered household. At the same time, the subjects filled out subjective questionnaire on thermal sensation and thermalcomfort. The results indicated that air temperature and mean radiant temperature had bigdifferences at rural houses in severe cold region during the heating period in winter.Radiant temperature had a large influence on human thermal comfort. The operativetemperature is recommended as an evaluation thermal comfort index. The past day consecutive daily average air temperature is recommended as theinput parameters of indoor air temperature to evaluate the indoor thermal comfort atrural houses in severe cold region in winter. The predicted models of human body thermal sensation were obtained at ruralhouses and urban residential buildings in severe cold region. The significance tests wereconducted. The corresponding thermal neutral temperatures and the operativetemperature accepted by80%were obtained. The affect of the air velocity on the mean radiation temperature was analyzed forrural houses, and the results showed that the air velocity might be regarded as a constantvalue in order to simplify the test method. The simplified calculation formula of radiation temperature and operative temperature were put forward. The simple testmethod for indoor thermal environment was presented.Through the Binary Logistic regression analysis of the survey data, thewindow-opening models of urban residential buildings in severe cold region during theheating period in winter were got.Through the regression analysis, the regression formulas of clothing insulation andmean thermal sensation, clothing insulation and operative temperature were obtained. The adaptive behavior of the subjects at rural houses and urban residential buildings insevere cold region are analyzed.
