A new axial magnetic field actuating device containing the functions of levitation and rotation isproposed to drive magnetic levitation ball (MLB) rotate. Rotating magnetic field (RMF) in the air-gapis generated by3-phase AC current in the driving windings, and the interaction between RMF andMLB eddy current induced by RMF produces the torque to realize the MLB rotation. In order toanalyze the device’s characteristics, electromagnetic model of this actuating device is established. Andthe electromagnetic relationship in actuating device is analyzed using electromagnetic theory.Sub-loop model was set to simplify the calculation. In order to analyze electromagnetic model in2-dimension electromagnetic theory way, the ring-shaped sub-loop model is unfolded into a rectanglesub-loop model. On the basis of multi-layer traveling magnetic field method, the torque expressionwas obtained by analyzing the established electromagnetic model. And the relevant parameters whichmay have some influence on the torque performance are also analyzed. The model’s magnetic fielddistribution characteristics were analyzed by finite element analysis (FEA) software Ansoft, and themagnetic flux density curve in different position and different path were given. In order to verify thefeasibility of the method, the sub-loop type2D FEA method was used to simulate the3D magneticfield distribution. Finally, manufacturing the integrated device was manufactured and tested. Theexperiment results show that the integrated device can realize the MLB statically stable levitation. Thedriving test result show that MLB can stably rotate at low speed. The test proves that the new axialmagnetic field actuating device is reasonable and feasible.
