China launched her1st mars probe Yinghuo-1(YH-1) in2011. It’s a major space explorationproject for china following manned spacecraft and lunar exploration projects. It is also the first timethat China carried out extraterrestrial planetary space environment exploration and it will complete theexploration of exploring the Martian "secret" why the water disappears, revealing the mission of thespace environment evolution of the terrestrial planets characteristics. But unfortunately theexploration mission failed. December2011, China’s State Council issued the White Paper of2011, itsays that China will strive to achieve independent exploration of Mars in2013. How to make full useof the existing mars information is the technical and practical issues of planning, implementation anddevelopment of the Mars exploration project in China that cannot be avoided. And it’s the necessaryway to improve China’s Mars probe technology. Now deep space network for our country hasn’t beenconstructed and the location accuracy of MEX by the Chinese VLBI Network is only0.1as, which isdifficult to provide security for precise orbit determination of mars probes.A new method for locating of mars probes by using the remote sensing images is proposed. Thismethod gets position of mars probes by using strict sensor imaging geometric model throughmatching of ground control points and the corresponding image points, providing theory and technicalsupport for the location of mars probes. Use the imaging geometric model on dual quaternion tocomplete bundle adjustment, and to express position and attitude of time series of images. Derive thelinear equations of bundle adjustment on the dual quaternion to compensate for the imaging geometrymodel error. On the basis of theoretical studies we do the experiment of the actual images andsimulated images for Odyssey. The result shows that the great potential of the new method for marsprobes’ orientation. The new method will improve our Mars exploration process tracking andpositioning level, and provide theory and technical support for the location of mars probes.
