Colored glaze is commonly known as “tricolor”. As an important category in thehistory of ancient Chinese ceramics, it is a typical example of ceramic art widelyapplied in the field of architecture after Qin brick Han tile.This article takes colored glaze this building material as the research topic, basedon the following reasons: first, because it is attached to ancient architectures, especiallythe palace architecture and it has the culture of feudal architecture etiquette, under theinfluence of royalty feudal system for thousands of years, colored glaze smacks offeudal hierarchy and generates certain deeply ingrained impact on people’s ideology andsocial cognition. That illustrates colored glaze has become a cultural symbol and isdeeply rooted in people’s minds.Second, for its practicality of anti-corrosion and anti-oxidation, the buildingmaterial of colored glaze products can replace terracotta roof tile to be used on thebuilding roof as a novel building material, and in the meantime its good water resistanceand superiority of roof drainage ensure the stability of building roof, thus ensuring thesafety of building.Finally, for its gorgeous, unique decoration, colored glaze can be used as the onlydecorative material on the roofs of royal architectures. The gorgeous decoration andbrilliant decorative effect can play the role of embellishing and decorating architectures,and give people the enjoyment of visual beauty.It is just colored glaze’s multiple properties of culture, practicality and decoration that provoke people’s thinking about how colored glaze is used in modern architecture.How to better apply colored glaze in the decoration of contemporary architecture, tobetter serve the original intention of architecture design and the design intent conveyedby the designer, making colored glaze to be the finishing touch, becomes one problemworthy of our thinking and studying.The article, through methods of literature review, investigation and analysis, casestudy, comprehensively makes an in-depth analysis and research on colored glaze’sproperties of practicality and aesthetics as well as its culture endowed by history.During the in-depth analysis and research, it’s found that the colored glaze’sproperty of cultural symbol brought by feudal hierarchy has a very deep impact onpeople’s minds, which in some ways limits the use of colored glaze in contemporaryarchitecture environment. In contemporary architecture, colored glaze is mainly usedfor the repair of ancient buildings, pseudo-classic architectures, and some large nationalbuildings with special functions and function orientations. But the property of coloredglaze itself does not obstruct the creativity of colored glaze this material itself. It canstill bring people the enjoyment of decorative beauty and visual beauty, and evensomewhat limited it can still face a broader prospect.
