With the advent of the information age, radio and television has become aindispensable way to get information for most of people. As the carrier of radio andtelevision, TV tower appeared. And with the development of radio and televisionindustry, TV tower gradually become part of people’s lives. City is the main andindispensible carrier of the broadcasting and television information. TV tower isgenerally located in the core area of a city in order to make the wide coverage of thebroadcasting and television signal and to reduce energy loss of electric wave with whichbarriers interfere. Undoubtedly, TV tower with the huge volume, super height andpersonalized shape will become a landmark of a city. Meanwhile, As the most importantconstruction of the commanding height space of city, TV tower with over high buildingform the city skyline.With the development of city’s modernization, the form of TV tower is changed alot with the needs of its function and construction of technological innovation. NowadyTV tower not only should meet the needs of broadcasting and television transmitting,but it also has various and comprehensive functions such as tourism, catering andleisure. Beautiful landscape of the tower and overlooking a spectacular view of the cityare both the charactes of TV tower. It is landscape of the city as well as a place to enjoythe beautiful scenery. Therefore, the architectural designing and the image expression ofthe environmental landscape of TV tower plays a key role in reflecting the cultural tasteof the city, enhancing the city image, displaying the architectural aesthetics andstrengthening the city space nodes.In this paper, at first, the author discusses the development vein of the TV tower builidings in the wordwild and sets up the main research object which is themulti-functional comprehensive TV tower as the Germany Stuttgart TV tower. And then,takes the typical TV towers in the world for example, from the angles such as spacefunction organization, form characteristics, structure selection, night view lighting andthe cultural landscape connotation to analys the relationship of the form and function ofthe TV tower which is regarded as a kind of special type of building. At the same time,explores the society, politics, economy, technology and historical reasons of theemergence and development of the TV tower. After then, mainly discusses theisomorphism of the TV tower and the urban environment image. Analysis that the TVtower as the landmark in the city to be the leading role of the city enviromental imageform three progression——the status and the significance of the TV tower to a city, therelevant system theory of TV tower and the city, and the TV tower for the city landscapeshape. Finally, the author takes the representative TV towers in China and in Japan forexample, discusses the characteristics and the innovations in design and constructing.As a result, the author hopes that this study will be helpful for further researches of thisfield.
