This article selects one of Tang Dynasty little dragon and tiger pagodas in Stone Budda Temple,which located in Village Duan,Qing Zhou,Shandong Province,dated to 743 A.D(The Second year of Tianbao in Tang Dynasty),mainly discuss the relationship between this pagodas and its owner,Yang Zan,providing a research case of little dragon and tiger pagodas,which focus on its construction in Tang Dynasty and the action of related participators.This article is divided into three chapters,the core issue is why Yang Zan selected little dragon and tiger pagoda as constructing object.This will refer to the meaning of pagoda inscription and architectural modeling,especially to Yang Zan and other people in Tang Dynasty,and this meaning just the connotation of material carrier which endowed by the faith culture of Tang Dynasty.The first chapter mainly analyzes the Yang Zhan-bulit Pagoda's inscription,discuss the content of inscription and the grammar of text,concluding that this pagoda was built by collecting money from a specific society named 'She Yi',and the special job of caving inscription was hired specially-assigned person,etc.The second chapter discuss the architectural modeling and the pagoda image elements,tracing the origin of the model and image and the possible solutions of learning,thinking how the craftsman integrated?combined multiple elements to create new kind of pagoda based on inheriting,then discuss the purpose and meanning from these forms on Yang Zan-built pagoda.After close reading of Yang Zan-built pagoda,the third chapter place the little pagoda into the historical original context,discuss it's historical conditions and cultural background,then think about the way adopted by the people of Tang Dynasty when they toward the concept of death,and the influence of little dragon and tiger pagodas in the later generations.On the basis of predecessors' knowledge,this article claims that the little dragon and tiger pagodas represented by Yang Zan-built pagoda in Tang Dynasty have the functions of carving inscription/sacrificing and aesthetic appearance,in addition to its 'blessing the past' functions and properties,which be regarded as a kind of strongly synthetical architectural art.It's also the material entity of the concept of death and the integration of the buddhist faith,which is a kind of typical works sculpted by the authorities to service the culture of life and death in the flourishing period of Tang Dynasty.
