Low-rise brick-concrete structure is one of the main structure forms in China’srural area. It has many advantages, such as easily obtained building materials, simpleconstruction measures and low cost. However, because of people’s poor awareness ofdisaster prevention and the thought of trying to reduce the cost of housing construction, rural brick-concrete structures usually don’t have complete seismic measures. As aresult, their seismic capacities are insufficient in general. From the point of self-helphousing in rural area, it is necessary to discuss and study the material performanceindexes, local size limit and seismic measures of low-rise brick-concrete structure sothat the maximum optimization of housing safety and economy can be achieved. On the basis of extensive surveys, common problems of self-built brick-concretestructures are summarized in this paper. A low-rise brick structure model is designedwith the characteristics of small local dimension, incomplete seismic measures and etc.Shaking table test of the brick-concrete structure which is1/4of the protype isconducted, in which cracking and failure modes, natural vibration behaviors, acceleration and displacement responses under different earthquake intensities arestudied. Observe the overall seismic performances and weak parts under aboveunfavorable factors.Finite element model of the brick-concrete structure with common features isestablished by software ANSYS. In order to study the dynamic characteristics, structuraldynamic response and structural seismic capacity under different seismic intensities, modal analysis, spectral analysis, elastic time history analysis and dynamicelastic-plastic analysis for the brick-concrete structure are conducted. At the same time, the finite element analysis verifies the impact of above unfavorable factors on seismicperformance of the housing. Compare the finite element analysis and the experimentresult. The paper establishes other four finite element models by unsetting structuralcolumns, reducing strength of mortar, the thickness of the wall and the width of thewindow wall. Analyze seismic response of them and seismic shear capacity analysis ofwall limbs, study the impact of different design conditions for the overall structure andcheck shear capacity analysis of wall limbs, which have features of low mortar strength, narrow width. Based on the experimental study and finite element analysis, the basicrequirements of the rural brick-concrete structure on seismic design are stated at the endof the paper.
