Subgrade, as the basis of the road, carries its own weight and the upper load, its strength and stability are related with the life of the entire road. Due to the compaction inadequate of the subgrade, the surface disease, such as:rutting, subsidence, water damage are widespread. Loess is widely distributed in Northwest Territories, it is mainly material used in road construction. The Loess is classified in special soil, with special engineering properties. Loess is porosity, collapsible, easy to produce uneven settlement, caused to pavement cracking. Numerous studies show that, the compacted loess’s collapsibility is weaker than the natural loess. Therefore, the design and construction of loess subgrade should be guaranteed the degree of compaction. In the paper, based on the typical loess strata profile in Wutian village, Linwei township, Weinan city, by the means of field trips, laboratory experiments and theoretical analysis, researched the loess formation features, maximum dry density and optimum moisture content. It is drawn that the loess layers with poor soil, high silt content, the particle size is relatively uniform, and analyzes the following conclusions:(1) The loess formation’s maximum dry density is ranged in1.85g/cm3to1.966g/cm3, optimum moisture content in the range of11.7%to15.5%;(2) The loess strata stratigraphic from late to early, maximum dry density decreases, the maximum moisture content increases gradually, but Q3, Q2, Q1strata are propinquity;(3) Loess strata yellow layers moisture content are less than the the red layers, maximum dry density are consistency. This paper, also explored the reasons for the formation of this law, provides reference and basis for the highway construction.
