Study On Cave Dwelling In Gongyi City, Henan Province

The cave building was one of the oldest existing traditional house types. It was builtaccording to local conditions and had a unique geographical feature. It had a characteristicof cool in summer and warm in winter which well coincide with today’s architecturaltrend of green ecological. These factors made the cave building having a high degree ofprotection and research value. However, with the development of society, the cavebuilding facing a huge challenges because it can not meet the increasing needs of life.The object of this paper was the cave building in Gongyi, which belonged to the cavedwelling in West of Henan Province, had a variety of types and widely distributed. Therewas a number of cave manor and former residence such as The Kang million estate whichhad high historical and cultural value. In recent years, a growing number of architects hadconcerned about the cave building. For various reasons, there are many researches of cavebuilding in Shanxi and Gansu Province but a little researches of cave building in West ofHenan Province especially in Gongyi.This paper first introduced the background and significance of the study, definition ofrelated concepts as well as the domestic and international status of research. Subsequently,overview of the Gongyi region’s geography, history and culture provided a theoreticalfoundation for the regional analysis of the cave building in Gongyi.Secondly, this paper conducted intensive research and analysis on the layout featuresand constitute characteristics of the cave building in Gongyi. Through field visits,questionnaires and theoretical research methods this paper investigated the status andevolution of the cave building in Gongyi, illustrate the advantage of it and proposed thenecessity and practical significance of the development of cave dwelling in Gongyi.Thirdly, research and analysis the specific example of the distribution, type of layoutand preservation situation of the cave building in Kangnan village, which provided areference for the overall development of Gongyi regional cave building.Finally, under the guidance of the update and development principles, in connectionwith the situation and existing problems of Gongyi cave building, this study summed up the reality, viable, long-term update strategy. Additional, provided an available updateddesign programs for a single cave courtyard through the combination of traditional cavearchitecture and new technology, new energy technologies. On the basis of cave updatestrategy, the study proposed regional development strategy of cave building in Gongyi.
