Both thermal comfort and energy consumption need to be considered whenselecting the indoor design parameters in the design of air conditioning project.Buildings with different types and functions have different requirements of indoorenvironment. Therefore the energy consumptions corresponding to the combination ofdifferent indoor design parameters are also different. This paper studyed how toevaluate the thermal comfort level with the combination selected indoor designparameter and how to choose the indoor design parameter combination with minimumenergy consumption for a required indoor thermal comfort level. This paper investigated the influence of temperature, relative humidity and airvelocity on PMV value respectively with a computer program developed from theformulas calculating PMV-PPD. The calculated results showed that the effect oftemperature, relative humidity and air velocity on PMV value is: air temperature>relative humidity> air velocity. This paper also investigated the influence of temperature, relative humidity and airvelocity on the energy consumption of air conditioning by means of the software VEto simulate a developed air conditioning model of office building in Guangzhou. Thesimulated results showed that under a same indoor thermal comfort level, the requiredenergy consumption of air conditioning for a combination of higher relative humidityand lower temperature was less than that for a combination of lower relative humidityand higher temperature.Based on the study results, a method was proposed for selecting the indoor designparameter combination under a same indoor thermal comfort level in this paper. Inthis study the indoor design parameter combination was recommended with fourindoor thermal comfort levels for reference of air-conditioning designer.
