In Earthquake Engineering, three characteristics of the ground motion are significant:the amplitude, frequency content and duration. However, it is always a difficulty to seek a comprehensive ground motion intensity index for structural seismic analysis.Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) has been widely used in structural seismic analysis at present, but PGA is not perfect according to the research and experience in recent years.Masonry pagoda is the outstanding representative and precious heritage of ancient high-rise buildings. In Wenchuan earthquake, a large quantity of pagodas have suffered seismic damage of different degrees. To study the ground motion intensity index for the evaluation of structural damage, this paper summarized the various commonly used earthquake intensity indices, and based on the typical seismic responses of SDOF, MDOF systems and finite element model, the correlation between different ground motion intensity indices and the seismic response of masonry pagodas is analysed, and the advantages and disadvantages of the indices are given as references. The main research contents are as follows:(1) The classification of commonly used earthquake intensity index is summarized.By the use of17sets of ground motion data in Wenchuan earthquake, topographic effect array data and10sets of worldwide ground motion data, the difference is analysed between the peak values of unidirectional and bidirectional acceleration response spectrum.(2) By calculating the maximum response of SDOF and MDOF masonry pagoda models using time history analysis method and the various intensity indices under34seismic waves, the correlation between different ground motion intensity indices and structural responses is given.(4) In order to test and verify the rationality of intensity indices obtained above SDOF and MDOF system, the maximum response of finite element solid models and the various intensity indices under34seismic waves are calculated, the correlation and effectiveness between different ground motion intensity indices and structural responses is summarized...
