Rubber seals are widely used for their good sealing performance. Because of rubber material weakness in molecular structure, aging of the rubber seals shall be involved in comprehensive actions of internal and external factors during processing, storage and use and finally causes them to lose sealing performance. There are many accidents which are caused by the sealing failure of the rubber seals and cause huge losses, so it is important to study the operational reliability and life of the rubber seals. However, the natural aging test which evaluates the operational reliability and life of the rubber seals takes a long time and needs high costs, therefore it can’t meet the requirement that quickly assessing the operational reliability and life of the rubber seals. In order to meet the requirement, the o-ring for a ammunition is used as research object and the accelerated degradation testing is used as technological means and compression permanent distortion as the parameter of its performance degradation, and the accelerated degradation test methods for the o-ring based on constant stress and step stress are researched. The reliability function of the o-ring under its operating stress level is acquired through the tests, and its reliable life, t0.99, is about2years. The hygrothermal aging test for the o-ring is conducted and the test results show that moisture factor benefits the operational reliability and life of the o-ring at high temperature. The error of the result of the accelerated degradation testing for the o-ring compare with the operating environment simulation test for the o-ring in the lab is within acceptable range and is conservative. The test result is conservative for two reasons. First, in the accelerated degradation testing, the recovery time of the elastic deformation of the o-ring before testing its compression permanent distortion is short. Second, there is no the effect of the moisture in the test. In a word, the accelerated degradation testing method for the o-ring is feasible, and the result is receivable, and provides reference for engineering application.
