In tradition structure, there are such typical members as beam, column, plate, wall, shell, and cable. Due to absorbing excessive earthquake energy, some members may enter into elastic-plastic state, even yield or fail under strong earthquake, with a consequence of repair failure later or direct collapse. Dampers added to structures are responsible for consuming energy introduced by earthquake or other dynamic inputs. The supplemental energy dissipation systems can be used to control story drift, improve or upgrade the structural seismic performance of new or existing building. This technology has been becoming one tendency of earthquake engineering research and practice. Scholars and engineers of this domain in many countries are being engaged in this field of research and practice. In the paper, seismic response and optimum design of structures with supplemental viscous damping. The main research contents and conclusions are as follows:1. Introduce the principle analyzing of application energy method, is divided into the two majority of quiet strength method and motive force method. To in the calculation of energy, have explained in the quiet strength method basic theories; Power the intersection of method, and part introduce single the intersection of degree of freedom and energy of system mainly relation express and many the intersection of degree of freedom and system energy reflect relevant contents such as the expression formula, etc..2. Deducing the relation of the damping and the square of differential coefficient of the structural vibration mode by the energy principle above, and finding out the suitable damping value and maximizing the energy dissipation, which is based on uniform experiment design method (UD) and the non-parameter regression method-ACE(Alternating Conditional Expectations). And comparing with the calculated results, then concluded the superiority and effectiveness. 3. The paper gives one practical projects which prove the paper method is feasible and get well economic benefit.
