Virtual reality sprang up in1980s and prospered in this century with the rising ofcomputer hardware level. It is a newly developed advanced technology integrating manysubjects, Now it’s widely applied in fields of aerospace, architecture, medical, military,education, sports and others. By applying virtual reality technology to realize digitalvirtualization on historic building cultural heritage, the viewers will feel a sense of “passingthrough” time and space, which provides important showing and reference on the heritage’srestoration, repairing, protection and demonstration. However, limitations and defects existingin the virtual reality software system, along with3D games engine’s powerful intelligentinteractive function and incomparable image quality resulted from the rapid development ofNextGen gaming at the beginning of this century, makes it possible for3D games engine toreplace virtual reality technology. In particular, studies on3D games engine’s digitalvirtualization on China’s historic buildings has more realistic significance and will exertfar-reaching influence on many fields.This paper focuses on how to replace virtual reality technology with3D games engine torealize digital virtualization on China’s historic buildings by steps. Through takingcomparisons and studies on the two technologies, the author provides theoretical foundationfor later studies. The arguments and studies on the feasibility and method of applying3Dgames engine in the digital virtualization of China’s historic buildings has further paved theway to undertake realistic practice and applications. Firstly, the paper introduces theapplication of virtual reality technology in the digital virtualization of historic buildings inforeign countries and points out the shortcomings and insurmountable difficulties existing invirtual reality technology in the process of recovering China’s historic buildings. Secondly,through showing3D games engine’s more humanized interactive method and more shockingimage quality in some representative games, the author gives a summarization on its merits asimmersion, time and space transcending, interactivity and fidelity. Then the author comes upwith principles and requirements on digital virtualization on China’s historic buildings fromperspectives of arts and cultural experience, and gets the conclusion that3D games engine ismore appropriate for digital virtualization on China’s historic buildings. Finally, the author illustrates the procedure and method of applying3D games engine in recovering China’shistoric buildings. Since3D games engine was developed for producing games, it’s necessaryto summarize which modules or functions of3D games engine can be used in the digitalvirtualization of historic buildings and things require special attention through practicalapplication. Generally speaking, the fresh new trial of applying3D games engine in the digitalvirtualization of historic buildings can better combine arts and technology to realize virtualrestoration. Looking into future, it will raise virtual restoration technology to a higher level.And it will be the author’s honor to be able to do some contribution to restore, repair andprotect China’s historic building.
