As a new ship type, trimaran has been developed rapidly in past decades. It composed ofa main hull and two side hulls. The form of main hull is slender which displacementaccounted for over90percent of the total. The slender hull contributes to reducing theresistance. Side hulls play a role of improving stability, as well as the resistance performancein low speed zone through forming favorable wave interference with main body. Theexistence of the side of the body also increase the deck area, and advantageous to the cabinlayout.Since late20th century, the trimaran technology has experienced from conceptual design,a series of theoretical research and model test process. In the early stages of the study, the keyresearch of trimaran is the favorable interference of side hulls and main hulls. With thedeeping of the research, the further performance research corresponding to the particular shiptype, such as structure design, stability, seaworthiness are on the agenda. So far, thedeveloped countries, led by Britain and United States, take the construction of trimaran as thepart of development strategy. China also invested financial and human resources for trimarantechnology.The paper analyse the contradiction and meeting point between performances andpreliminary designs. Furthermore, lots of research has been done for the Taiwan Straithigh-speed trimaran, which include the basis previous studies, researches of overallperformance of trimaran and performance optimum. Combined with the preliminary design,the paper using the theory of ship design, computational fluid dynamics methods and someother methods to makes a further analyse and study on rapidity, structural design and stability.Finally, the unity of the functionality and performance of the trimaran have been achieved.Main researches of the paper are as follows:1. Trimaran general arrangement to fit the ship’s function requirements based on theship design theory and methods,. Further, analyzed the performance of trimaran,seek for the best fit of performances.2. Trimaran resistance performance are analyzed in paper by computational fluiddynamics method. The host power was calculate and selected as well.3. Structure size is calculated by specification, and the mechanical characteristics oftrimaran structure were analyzed.4. Characteristics of stability as well as the damage stability are analyzed in chapterfive, and the ship security was demonstrated.
