Flat intersections are the bottlenecks of urban road network, with the high growth ofvehicles, constructed speed of road basic facilities were not matching the increase of vehicles.How to use effective traffic organized methods to optimize the working efficiency of flatintersections is become the key to decrease traffic congestion. Waiting-area is the one trafficorganized method to increase capacity of flat intersections, in recent years, many scholars inour country researched it, and use it in many cities, after that, they got some study andpractice achievement.This paper is basic on existing theories at home and abroad, including channelizationdesign, traffic signal, traffic organized, left-turn waiting area and comprehensive waiting area.Discuss the process and method of left-turn waiting area and comprehensive waiting area.In study of left-turn waiting area, this paper introduces the design concept of left-turnwaiting area, and analyzes the traffic conditions, signal conditions and geometry conditions toset it. This paper also design the marker line and signal plan of left-turn waiting area, anduse the improving method of ‘stop line’ to determine the added value of green light intervaltime in different phase method.In study of comprehensive waiting area, this paper introduce the design concept ofcomprehensive waiting area. Then discuss the traffic conditions, signal conditions andgeometry conditions to set it, and put forward its length and the signal design method. At last,this paper analyzes the vehicle average delay and average number of parking after settingcomprehensive waiting area.After the theory research, we use two flat intersections in Guangzhou to illustrate thedesign method of left-turn waiting area and comprehensive waiting area, and then useVISSIM simulation to analyze the promotion effect after setting waiting area.
