In the steel production process, the detection of the steel plate width is an important indicator of quantity. Currently, the measurement of the steel plate width is accomplished manually, which has many disadvantages, including low efficiency, low-precision and low yield. In order to overcome these difficulties, a new measurement system was developed in the present study. By using a photo-electrical detector, we could detect the width of the rolling in a real-time and accurately manner. In our detection system, the CPLD chip is the core controller. Firstly, pulse signal was generated by the program coded by the VHDL language. Secondly, the pulse signal-activated CCD outputs two signals which input into the non-inverting inputs of the comparator to compare with a threshold level signal for binarization processing. Subsequently, two Square wave signals were generated and enter into a CPLD internal data storage processing to merge into one signal, which was transformed to an analog signal by a single chip digital signal transformer. Finally, the signal was displayed on the LCD monitor as the analog signal. This device is consists of two systems, one is the real-time detecting system for steel width, and another is the automatic controlling system for following rolling steel thickness which will be helpful to ensure the produced rolling can meet the actual needs. After repeated tests, our device is capable of being used in the actual application. The accuracy of this device is1mm, which can meet the design requirement. Overall, this detection system will be helpful for the further exploration of steel measurement research.
