In recent years, the high-speed rail has got rapid development, at the same time, a problem has become more and more prominent, which is the reliability of the traction power supply has been influenced by the lightning. As a result, the research on protecting traction power network from lightning destruction has important theoretical significance and engineering application value.This article firstly bases on the randomness of actual stroke lightning traction power network path, deduces upper and lower limit function about angle of orientation, and calculates the lightning strike rate of the traction network in MATLAB. An example has been used to determine the lightning distribution characteristic of the traction power network. Then, the article chooses the appropriate algorithm to introduce the modeling methods of traction network. In this way, can we get numerical electric network. Finally, in the electromagnetic transient software PSCAD, we structure traction network model, and carry on the lightning transient analysis and protection research.This article can be divided into several parts. Firstly, we analyze the feasibility of building the bridge model and the rail model, which is in good agreement with the literature data. Secondly, we analyze the voltage distribution regularity of lightning overvoltage when stroking the bridge. The spread characteristic of the rail also is discussed in this article. At last, we analyze the lightning withstanding level and insulator voltage change of lightning traction power network backbone and suspension wire. Apart from that, four situations are taken into account; those are through ground protection line, through ground unprotected line, without a ground protection line, without a ground unprotected line, in order to ensure the lightning withstanding level of traction power network.Through lightning transient analysis of the traction power network, this article discusses the protective effect of installing lightning arrester in traction power network, as well as the protective effect of installing ground wire and reducing the grounding resistance in traction power network. Then comes to a conclusion, the protective effect of installing lightning arrester maybe limited, but if used in alliance with the other two measures, it will effectively improve the protective effect of traction power network.
