Vibration is a common phenomenon often causes negative impacts in the daily lives of people with engineering practice. With the development of research and application on methods and techniques of structural vibration control, exploring new and effective method of vibration control has been attracting more and more attention. Rely solely on changing the natural vibration period of the system structure to suppress the vibration, the effectiveness for vibration suppression efficiency are often subject to constraints, to improve the damping characteristics of the system structure to improve the vibration suppression capability which makes suppression of vibration could be more useful in reducing impacts of vibration on the performance of the system architecture work in the broader, more stimulus-response frequency range.Non-obstructive particle damping (NOPD) is a new kind of composite damping and passive control technology of vibration suppression, developed on the basis of the impact damping and particle damping technology since1990s. It can apply to the poor working environment with good damping characteristics and excellent damping effect. It means that an appropriate amount of metal or non-metallic particles are filled to existing already or processed holes of the structure, in the transmission path of the vibration. During the vibration of structure, the momentum exchange and the vibration energy consumption occur through the collision and friction between particles to achieve the objective of damping. NOPD has many advantages:such as, small changes to the original system, significant increase in the damping of structure, applicability to the poor environment, and constant damping performance over time etc.In this paper, studies will be made on cylindrical particle damper characteristics, mainly in the following areas:1. Elaborate on the basic principles of the granular element method which is used for simulation of particle damping technology, and in accordance with the basic theory of the granular element method, to establish the mechanical model of particle damping. According to the mechanical model, analyze the impact of particle damping technology on consuming energy and suppressing vibration.2. According to the experiment doing on the system, observe and analyze the impact of particle damping on vibration suppression.3. For the guidelines for the application of particle damping technology has not been defined yet, doing studies on the factors which can impact on the capacity of particle damping method through the experiments doing on the system. According to the results of the experiments, sum up the trend of various factors on the damping effect of the particle damping method and get the specific guidelines for the application of particle damping method and get the specific mathematical expressions of the trend through the function fitting.4. According to the mathematical expressions, to calculate the response of system under the given conditions. Dong experiments under the same conditions to test the response of system. Comparing the actual value and the calculated value and analyzing the reason of deviation. According to the results of analysis, sum up the calculation methods which can be used in estimating the response of system to make the quantitative analysis of the capacity on consuming energy of particle damping method more intuitive.
