With the increasing acceleration of urbanization, urban traffic problems become more and more prominent, and the problems of traffic congestion often happen. In the traffic network, the designers’ main goal is to make the traffic network efficient. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict the status of vehicles in the next time due to the randomness of human behavior, so the control of traffic network is a difficult problem. In fact, the traffic network is controlled by setting the layout of the traffic lights, designing the road width, limiting the amount of vehicles and so on.The thesis is divided into three parts. Firstly, we briefly introduce the status of research on the traffic network, elaborate the basic issues and practical problems, and discuss the formation and characteristics of traffic jams. Secondly, we give a brief introduction about the traffic model of the one dimensional cellular automaton-Nagel Schreckenber (NS) model. Overtaking strategies are proposed, and we set the new updating rules and analyze the related results. The space-time diagram from the computer simulations shows that the phenomenon of spontaneous obstruction will also appear under overtaking strategies. We find that overtaking strategies have improved the traffic flow, indicating that the existence of overtaking vehicles benefits the traffic network. Our results demonstrate that the overtaking strategies could improve the relaxation time above the critical density and reduce the order parameter at low density. In addition, the amplitude of the correlation function would decay more quickly for smaller p. For our model, we propose the conception of successful vehicle in overtaking, and find that it’s also able to reflect the phase transition and the self-adaptive behavior of vehicles that overtake successfully at blocking states. Finally, we introduce the traffic model of two-dimensional cellular automaton-Biham-Middlenton-Levine (BML) model and the traffic light strategies under this model. According to this model, a new rule on traffic lights is proposed, and we compare the new results with the previous ones, and finally discover that our strategies could efficiently develop the traffic flow, even though its contribution is not prominent, which indicates that the statues behind of the traffic lights should be paid more attention.
