The street, which is the most recognized and memorable space in a city, is the most vital part of a city. It functions for the traffic, serves as the carrier for urban life and culture, as well as reflects vitality and charm of a city. In the construction of the new urban area, the street space based completely on functional planning makes urban life indulged in "a large scale" and in fast traffic. Appearances of cities become similar, which leads to cultural fault and disappearance of features.This thesis starts with typology and analyzes, by field researches and surveys, some typical street spaces in Chengdu that bear urban features, mirror urban life and are vigorous. With the theoretical analysis and conclusions of questions, chapter three studies and analyzes the typical street space types in Chengdu, explores their components, and furthermore discusses how to apply these components to the new urban street space design. Chapter four studies the concrete case of Tianfu New City. Depending on the analyses about planning scale and present street space in Tianfu New City and on the application of the components of street space explored in chapter three, it reconstructs the components of street space in Tianfu New City. Depending on the construction of components of street space in Tianfu New City, chapter five discusses the design principle suitable for street space of new urban areas, in order to work out the street space that both maintains the efficiency for the new city and takes urban public life into consideration in the construction of a new city.Finally come the conclusion and prospect of the research findings in this thesis. In every developmental stage for a city, the corresponding urban scale will be accumulated in the urban space structure and the corresponding street space type will also be resulted. It is hoped that the citizens’public collective life in the street that brings vigor to the new city can come across time and space and be extended in the large-scale new urban street space featured by vehicle traffic.
