The frequency of the seismic activity complies with certain periodic law. Analysing data in different stages of the past century, both from the point of view of seismic frequency or intensity of earthquakes, the world has entered a period of earthquake-prone. China is an earthquake-prone country, particularly in recent years, the earthquakes in China bring huge trauma to the society. Bridges are the lifeline of the entire traffic system, which would bring immeasurable loss of people’s lives and property in case of damaged, so that seismic performance of bridges is particularly important.Steel box tied arch bridge with its advantages of reasonable force, strong bearing capacity, large spanning capacity, adaptability to surrounding environment, etc., are increasingly becoming popular in the construction of bridges which is widely used in the construction of highways and urban roads. Currently, studies on seismic response of steel box tied arch bridges is less than other types of bridge. In front of the trend of bridge construction, the research of this field needs to be performed as an urgent problem. The main damage of bridge with the causes of them is summarized in this thesis. The origin, development, mechanical characteristics and mechanics analysis method of steel box tied arch bridges are mentioned in this thesis with the research status at home and abroad and some kinds of calculation method of seismic responses of bridges with the principle and application scope of them.Based on the engineering background of a steel box tied arch bridge in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, seismic response is analysed with both response spectrum method and time history analysis method using midas Civil, a finite element analysis software, and the calculated results of these two methods is compared later. Effects of the vertical seismic wave, traveling wave, arrangement position and stiffness of lateral braces on seismic response are also considered in this thesis. The results of this thesis can be used for reference in seismic design calculation of this kind of bridge.
