As the speed of high-speed trains is continually increasing, reliability of catenary on electric railway is strictly requested, the reliability is directly related to the normal operation of railway system. Therefore, accurate evaluation on reliability of catenary, analysis of its machine failures and appropriate measures is most significantly meaningful for improving the reliability of catenary and ensuring safe operation of trains. In the paper reliability of catenary on electric railway is investigated as follows:Based on a large number of investigation data on failure tracking experiment, statistics of main failure components and the main failure mode is analyzed. Various failure factors of catenary is analyzed and evaluated, corresponding suggestions for maintenance of the different failure modes is proposed.Based on finite element analysis (FEA) theory and stress-strength interference theory, method for solving and analyzing static strength reliability on the clamp fittings of catenary is calculated. By taking the high-failure-rate part covering pipe-ear as a numerical example, its simplified mechanical model is established and its stresses under different external loads are obtained by using finite element analysis software. Considering the influences on the maximum stress by different external loads, the stress distribution of covering pipe-ear is calculated and its static strength reliability is obtained eventually. It provides a new method and academic basis for research and design on static strength reliability of components of catenary.Based on the principles of finite life design method, combining with the theory of pantograph-catenary interaction dynamics, a method of predicting fatigue life of contact lines is calculated. By taking the contact line of elastic stitched catenary as a numerical example, the stress-time history of the contact line is obtained by pantograph-catenary dynamic analysis. The rain-flow counting method is adopted to count, then a algorithm for stresses modification Goodman Line is adopted to modify, fatigue failure life of every single fatigue stress spectra is calculated by using the simplified fatigue S-N curve, the fatigue life of contact wire is estimated with the theory of Miner linear cumulative fatigue failure eventually. The conclusions provide important bases for construction, maintenance, replacement period of elastic stitched catenary on high-speed railway.Based on a large number of investigation data on failure tracking experiment and the fault tree analysis method, the fault tree of catenary system is established. Based on repairable characteristic of catenary, mathematic model is established by Markov theory and mathematical statistics principle. Availability, reliability and meantime-to-failure are calculated. Reliability of certain railway is analyzed and predicted with the model, some specific measures and methods to improve its reliability are proposed. It provides practieal guidance for improving the catenary system reliability and the operation and maintenance management level.
