With the increasing development of economy, many of metropolitans in China are facing gradually severe traffic congestions as the growth speed of traffic demand exceeds the scale of road resources. As a transportation model with high efficiency, public transportation is treated as an important strategy to alleviate urban traffic congestions. Therefore, researches on bus priority are paid growing attentions by foreign and domestic scholars. This dissertation researches on realizing bus priority by traffic signal control focusing on urban arterials. The main contributions in this dissertation are as followings:1. Comprehensively researching on foundation theories of signal control for bus priority, especially illustrating strategies and implementation methods of passive priority and active priority, which are regarded as theory foundations for research in this dissertation.2. Focusing on urban arterials, researching on several critical parameters of passive signal coordination for main roads (including cycle, green split and offsets); establishing optimization models for each parameter, aiming at minimizing average delays per passenger and adding bus priority as control condition; attaining optimized scheme for signal controls at urban arterials based on bus priority. Then introducing bus-platoon theory, establishing priority regulations for buses, implementing active priority methods on buses at intersections while rendering impacts on coordination signal control system as low as possible.3. Taking Zhongshan Rd. at Zhongshan City as simulation example, establishing two sets of simulation optimization control schemes, assessing the benefits of bus priority coordination signal control and bus-platoons proposed in this dissertation by VISSIM.
