Construction of the tunnel is a large project, before the construction many mechanical parameters can not be measured directly due to constrains of the site’s conditions. To systematically study the deformation of surrounding rock, the most effective way is to carry out geomechanical model test. Model test is an important method to study geotechnical engineering problems. The accuracy of the test data can directly affect the safety of the tunnel and the construction process, and the accuracy of the test data is directly decided by the quality of the test rig, so the model test rig plays a decisive role in the test.In this thesis, the structure of the plain strain model test rig is deeply researched and the advantages and disadvantages of various test rigs are summarized. Four different kinds of designs of the model test rig are proposed based on the analysis of current test rigs’ structures and combined with actual application requirements. The models of the four designs are built on the three-dimensional modeling software platform UG. Through the analysis of test rig’s components, improved structural program of the components are put forward. And finite element analysis software ANSYS Workbench is used to calculate and analysis to verify the reasonableness of the structure-improved components. Then the final structure program is determined through analysis and comparison of four programs. And combined with practical experience of engineering and technology the structure is optimized to reduce the weight of the test rig. ANSYS Workbench is used as the finite element analysis software platform to verify the test rig’s overall stiffness and strength. The overall stiffness and strength reached design’s goals. After all, the welding analysis soft ware SYSWELD is used to conduct welding simulation and computing and to provide theoretical basis for manufacturing. The test rig overcomes current rigs’advantages such as lacking of stiffness, requiring foundation treatment and cane. And the test rig achieves design goals of high stiffness and strength.
