During the running operation of mechanical equipment, a mass of wear particles are generated due to the relative motion of the friction pair, research proved that these wear particles have respective characteristics according to different wear mechanism. Ferrographic analysis is a fault diagnosis technology based on wear particle recognition; it’s an important means of mechanical equipment wear monitoring and fault diagnosis. Wear particle recognition is the key step of ferrographic analysis; the estimate result of wear particle recognition determines the validity of mechanical equipment wear state diagnosis directly. According to the diversity and complexity of wear particle, there is no mature theory method to guide, and no quantitative parameter to describe the wear particle objectively and comprehensively. Currently, the wear particle recognition is mainly done manually by microscope, which makes the ferrographic analysis difficult to get further promotion and application. Microscopic observation of wear particles shows that they have the characteristic of self-similarity and multi-scale fractal. With the introduction of fractal geometry and the development of computer image processing technology, the quantitative analysis and automatic identification of ferrographic wear particle is possible nowadays. This paper summarizes the domestic and overseas development status of ferrographic analysis technology and wear particle recognition, based on fractal theory and previous studies, five typical wear particles of Spherical wear particle, Flake wear particle, cutting wear particle, massive wear particle and laminar wear particle are studied.This article first introduce the fractal theory, for three common fractal dimension do a comparison, while selecting the method for calculating the abrasive surface profile fractal dimension and three-dimensional surface fractal dimension do a comparative analysis, Through the calculation select FAENA law and Box-counting method for calculating the fractal dimension of the abrasive.Then design the integration MATLAB software platform of picture processing and fractal dimension calculation, proceed gray level transformation, smoothing filtering, sharpen filter, graphic division and extract the boundary at last to calculate the fractal dimension of the abrasive outline the boundary information number, according to the three-dimensional surface laser scanning confocal microscope provided information to calculate the three-dimensional fractal dimension of the abrasive surface.Finally, processing five typical abrasive images captured by laser scanning confocal microscope to calculate the fractal dimension of abrasive surface profile and three-dimensional fractal dimension and its statistical analysis. Statistical results show that the fractal dimension of the use abrasive grit can identify.
