Roundabout is a special form of plane intersection consisting of a larger radiuscenter island and several intersecting roads. It is characterized by small delay time, lessnumber of parking, large capacity and high service level. But because no signal controlroundabout has been unable to resolve the growing traffic demand, the paper studies theroundabout signal control methods with Xinmin square roundabout as an example anduses this method to improve the traffic congestion problem of Xinmin square roundabouteffectively. In summary, this paper mainly consists of the following five components:1) The research status of domestic and foreign and the characteristics ofroundabout are analyzed. The paper summarizes the research status of roundabout ofdomestic and foreign and analyzes the development process of the roundabout controlmethods and characteristics.2) The existing three roundabout signal control methods are studied. The paperstudies the existing common roundabout signal control methods, analyzes the canalizationdesign of various control methods, the signal timing design and adaptability and proposesthe corresponding basis set.3) The roundabout operating efficiency evaluation indexes are established. Thepaper establishes an entrance lane capacity model and a weaving area capacity model withcapacity and delay as evaluation indexes of roundabout operation efficiency, divides thedelay into geometric delays and traffic delays, and builds a single signal control delaymodel and a dual signal control delay model.4) The roundabout signal control method is proposed. On the basis of analyzingthe existing problems, the paper puts forward a control scheme based on the single point ofcontrol and based on coordination control thoughts with the Xinmin square roundabout asan example.5) The feasibility and superiority of the signal control method are verified. Thepaper respectively carries out a simulation test on the original control scheme and controlscheme proposed by this paper using the VISSIM traffic simulation and presents thecorresponding simulation rendering. The paper carries out the comparison and analysis onthe simulation results with capacity and delay as evaluation indexes, thus proves thefeasibility and superiority of the proposed scheme.
