Paddy soil is largely distributed in China, accounting to1/5of the arable land. The rice/wheat system is a typical rotation in south china. In this system the soil condenses after the wet rice season and appropriate tillage is necessary for the following season crop drilling. Therefore in one hand the performance of the rotary machine needs to be tested and evaluated, and on the other hand the relationship between the resulted soil fragmentation state and wheat response need to be assessed, which will serve as a basis for the improvement of rice/wheat production.A torque measurement system was constructed first, which include the overall system design, fabrication of torque sensing parts, selection and design of measurement software. The constructed measurement system was used for signaling the knife shaft rotating speed and the loaded torque, and collecting the data points for saving and analyzing. The test work was conducted in field, in spring and autumn seasons respectively. Rotary tiller forwarding speed, rotary speed of the tiller, tilling depth parameters were controlled to attain the torque variations with respect to the changed working conditions and relevant soil fragmentation state. The result showed a significant relation between the magnitude of torque, soil fragmentation and rotary tiller’s working condition and soil physical states. This result will serve as a basis for the performance design of rotary tiller in paddy soil conditions. It was also revealed that, from the torque point of view, the formation of the torque was not a result from the simple additivity of the force from individual blades, while the mutual influence among the adjacent blades need to be investigated. The wheat response to paddy soil tillage method was investigated with topological reconstruction method in Pro/E platform. Wheat root system was analyzed with2-D and3-D fractal dimensions to illustrate the relationship between soil fragmentation degree and wheat root dynamics. This work revealed an increased trend both for fractal dimension and fractal abundance. Comparison between3-D and3-D fractal dimension showed that the3-D value was higher that that of the2-D, revolting the presumption that the2-D indices can be used as a surrogate for the3-D ones.An bunch new set of indices was proposed for the quantification of soil fragmentation and wheat response relations. The measured data of this relation was reconstructed into the spatial image in Pro/E for the aim of calculating wheat root system and soil fragmentation dynamics, and further the influence from different tillage treatments. These indices were helpful in quantifying the dynamics and the mutual relating among soil tillage, soil structural state and wheat root behavior, so that the mechanism affecting wheat performance can be articulated.
