Fuzhou zoo, founded in1956, was relocated to new place in Xindian town, north ofFuzhou city in2008. New zoo is15times bigger than old one. There were great changes inenvironment, number of species, number of animals and the way of breeding in the new zoo. They were all different from the old one. The occurrence of parasitic infection of Captivemammals in the new zoo was unknown. It is necessary to have the data of the occurrence ofparasitic infection in the animals for providing the scientific methods of prevention from it.Purpose: to investigate the occurrence of intestinal parasitic infection of Captive mammals inthe new zoo, including herbivorous animal (17species,62individuals),carnivorous animals (9species,21individuals),omnivorous animal (8species,52individuals),and primate animal (15species,108individuals),Method:237fresh faece samples were collected from243individualanimals of49species. Ovum of intestinal parasites was collected by the methods of saturatedsalt solution and Centrifuqation. EPG value was determined by the methods of McMastercount method. Characteristics of ovum and worms was determined by larval culture andmicroscope.Results:(1)Observed species of parasites:48species of digestive tract parasites wereobserved in237fresh faece samples from243individuals of48kinds of wildlife. They are2kinds of trematode,3kinds of tapeworm,38kinds of nematodes, and5kinds of protozoon, including liver flukes, Lynx fluke, Lynx mansoni spirometra tapeworm, Felis concolormansoni spirometra tapeworm, red panda (Ailurus fulgens) Hymenolepis nana, Panthera tigrisaltaica Strongyloides, Lemur catta Strongyloides, Papio anubis Strongyloides, Ailurus fulgensStrongyloides, Giraffa camelpoardalis Strongylus, Cervus elaphus Strongylus, Camelus ferusTrichocephalus spp., Camelus ferus Nematodirus spp., Pseudois nayaur Nematome, Budorcastaxicolor Strongylida, Budorcas taxicolor Nematodirus spp., Muntiacus muntjak Nematome;pony Nematome, Antelope Strongylus, Panthera tigris amoyensis Toxascaris leonina,Panthera tigris altaica Toxocara cati, Panthera tigris altaica Toxascaris leonina, Panthera Leo toxocariasis, Panthera Leo Toxocara cati, Felis concolor ancylostoma, Felis lynx Toxocaracanis, Ursus arctos Nematodes, Ursus arctos Ascarididae, Ailurus fulgens baylisascarios,Hystrix hodgsoni subcristata Pinworm, Hystrix hodgsoni subcristata Trichocephalus spp.,Erythrocebus patas Trichocephalus spp., Hylobates leucogenys Trichocephalus spp., Papiohamadryas Trichocephalus spp., Papio hamadryas Trichocephalus spp., Rhinopithceusroxellanae Trichocephalus spp., Mandrillus sphinx Trichocephalus spp., Macaca nemestrinaTrichocephalus, Macaca mulatta Trichocephalus spp., Cebus apella Trichocephalus spp.,Cebus apella hookworm, camelus Coccidiosis, Macaca mulatta ciliate, Papio AnubisBalantidium coli, Papio hamadryas Coccidiosis, Hystrix hodgsoni subcristata Coccidiosis.(2)Infection rates:11of17species of herbivorous animal were confirmed to beinfected by14kinds of digestive tract parasites. The infection rate was64.7%(11/17).5of9species of carnivorous animals were confirmed to be infected by11kinds of digestive tractparasites. The infection rate was55.6%(5/9).3of8species of omnivorous animal wereconfirmed to be infected by9kinds of digestive tract parasites. The infection rate was37.5%(3/8).10of15species of primate animal were confirmed to be infected by14kinds ofdigestive tract parasites. The infection rate was66.6%(10/15).(3)Infection strength: There was different infection strength in different species ofanimals. The most serious infection of intestinal parasites was observed in Lynx (Felis lynx),EPG(eggs per gram) of tapeworm and trematodes were up to45710/g and11700/g,respectively, the second was observed in ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta), EPG of trongyloideswas up to18750/g; the third was golden monkey(Rhinopithecus), EPG of whipworm was upto18300/g; IV is small Panda Bell roundworm eggs EPG up; the fourth was red panda(Ailurus fulgens), EPG of ascarid was up to12100/g; the fifth was South China Tiger, EPGof Toxocara cati was up to7200/g. The lower infection strength was also observed in others, their EPGs was in the range of about300-5000/g.
