Objectives:Urinary nerve growth factor (NGF) levels have been shown to beincreased inpatients with symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB). This study wasdesigned to measure the urinary NGF levels in patients with bladder outlet obstruction(BOO) with or without OAB and to determine whether urinary NGF can serve as abiomarker for OAB.Methods:Urinary NGF levels were measured in38male control subjects withoutlower urinary tract symptoms and153patients with BOO. The diagnosis of BOO wasfurther classified as BOO/non-OAB (n=21), BOO/OAB (n=25), BOO withurodynamically confirmed detrusor overactivity (BOO/DO, n=47), and BOO/OAB inpatients who had received successful medical treatment (n=60). The urinary NGF levelswere measured by enzyme-linked immu-nosorbent assay and compared among thedifferent groups.Results:Urinary nerve growth factor (NGF)levels were very low in the controlgroup (mean±standard error0.48±0.36) and in patients with BOO/non-OAB (1.02±0.89)and significantly greater in patients with BOO/OAB (40.9±10.9) and BOO/DO(50.2±8.80). The Urinary nerve growth factor (NGF)levels were not significantlydifferent between the BOO/OAB and BOO/DO groups; however, the Urinary nervegrowth factor (NGF) levels returned to normal levels (3.278±1.4) after successful reliefof OAB symptoms with medical treatment.Conclusions:In our study, patients with BOO/OAB or BOO/DO had significantlygreater Urinary nerve growth factor (NGF)levels compared with controls. These levelsdecreased to normal after successful relief of OAB symptoms. These results suggest thaturinary NGF could be a potential biomarker for BOO with symptoms of OAB.
