| Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is considered the gold standard surgical therapy for morbidly obese people.38patients who underwent LRYGB were studied in order to understand the changes in BMI and resolution of Type II Diabetes Mellitus along with a few other biochemical markers related to co morbidities, following surgery. The patients were divided into three major groups according to their initial BMI, BMI<30kg/m2(Overweight); BMI in between30and35kg/m2(Class I); and BMI>35kg/m2(Class â…¡ and Class â…¢). The time frame for the study was from May2010to August2011. Follow ups were done at1,6and12months respectively. Results:We found significant decrease in weight and BMI and in the biomarkers pertaining to T2DM, Fasting Blood Glucose levels, HbA1C, Insulin resistance and C peptide levels. Conclusion:Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass seems to be effective in reducing weight, BMI and other co morbidities significantly. The number of complications and the recovery period leads us to conclude that LRYGB is a relatively safe procedure and is equally effective. The patients were pleased with their outcomes barring a few. The co morbidities which the patients were suffering from due to their obesity problems were significantly lowered and in some cases treated completely. |
