ObjectiveBased on the empowerment theory, to evaluate the effects of the hemodialysiseducation on the level of self-efficacy, depression and biochemical parameters of thepatients with hemodialysis, and to provide method for the patient’s health education.MethodsFrom March2012to August2012,71hemodialysis patients were randomlydivided into the experimental group (n=36) and the control group (n=35). Accordingto the patient’s personal time, the experimental group was divided into six parts, everypart included five to seven patients. Every part consecutively received empowermenteducation courses for six weeks, it was90minutes for every education. The controlgroup took the conventional MHD nursing. After6weeks of sessions, all patientswere followed up twice every month by phone call,10~15minutes every time. Theself-efficacy, depression and biochemical parameters of both groups were evaluatedbefore intervention, after3months and6months intervention, respectively.Self-efficacy of patients was evaluated with the Chineses Version of self-efficacy formanaging chronic disease, and depression assessed by Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS), nutrition indicators concluded Serum creatimine, Hemoglobin, Serum albumin.Statistical methods included Descriptive statistical analysis of the statistical method, Trest, X~2test, ANOVA of respeated Measure.Results1The scores of self-efficacy, depression and biochemical parameters between twogroups were not significantly different before intervention (P>0.05).2The scores of self-efficacy, depression and biochemical parameters of the control group after three months and six months intervention were not significantly differentwith that before intervention. The scores between three months intervention and sixmonths intervention were not statistically different (P>0.05).3The scores of self-efficacy and level of Serum albumin of the experimental groupafter three and after six months intervention were higher than that before intervention.Scores of depression and level of Serum creatinine were lower than that beforeintervention, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).4Through three months intervention, the scores of self-efficacy and Serum albuminof the experimental group were more than that of the control group; scores ofdepression and level of Serum creatinine were lower than that of the control group, there were all statistical differences (P<0.05).5Through six months intervention, the scores of self-efficacy and Serum albuminof the experimental group were more than that of the control group; scores ofdepression and Serum creatinine were lower than that of the control group, there wereall statistical differences (P<0.05).6The scores of self-efficacy and Serum albumin of the experimental group after sixmonths intervention were higher than that after three months intervention; and scoresof their depression and level of Serum creatinine were lower than that after threemonths intervention, there were all statistical differences (P<0.05).ConclusionThe empowerment theory-based education can promote Hemodialysis patients’self-efficacy, reduce their depression and improve the level of biochemicalparameters.
