Objective: To detect the infection of human papillomavirus (HPV)6/11,16/18,31/33inpatients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and explore the relationshipbetween HPV infection and expressions of p16、EGFR、in tumor tissue and their clinicalsignificance. Methods: The infection of HPV6/11,16/18,31/33were detected by in situhybridization (ISH),and p16and EGFR were measured by immunohistochemistry inbiopsy or surgical specimens of43cases from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, and analysis its impact on the prognosis of cancer patients. The Spearman method wasused for rank correlation analysis Overall survival for patients were estimated byKaplan–Meier analysis.Cox regression model was used for multivariate analysis. Results:HPV6/11,16/18,31/33were detected in25.6%(11/43) of our patients.,WhichHPV16/18accounted for72.7%, HPV31/33accounted for27.3%, and HPV6/11accounted for0%; p16protein was expressed in53.5%. EGFR protein was expressed in69.8%of our patients. The difference between HPV-positive group and HPV-negativegroup in ethnicity, smoking, alcohol consumption was statistically significant(χ2=4.010,4.208,6.435;P=0.045,0.040,0.011). HPV infection was found to haverelation with p16and EGFR protein expression (χ2=4.768,7.819;P=0.029,0.009).p16protein expression has negative relation with EGFR protein expression(r=-0.411,P=0.006).3-year overall survival rates between the HPV-positive and negative were60.0%and59.7%(P=0.789).3-year overall survival rates were72.2%in p16-positivepatients and43.9%in p16-negative patients (P=0.012),3-year overall survival rates were48.8%in EGFR-positive patients and81.8%in EGFR-negative patients (P=0.037).Conclusion: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma may be initiated by HPVinfection, There may be differences in Uygur and Han in HPV infection. HPV infection has relation with p16and EGFR protein expression. p16positive prognosis wassignificantly better than the negative. p16is a prognostic factor of overall survival.
