Objective:The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence ofStreptococcus mutans (S.mutans) and Streptococcus sobrinus (S.sobrinus) in dental plaqueand saliva of children from Urumqi and correlate it to dental caries, and to assess theirassociation with the prevalence of deciduous caries. Methods:the study used a sample of169children,35of which were Uyghur with highdmft (dmft≥5),between3and5years of age. Dental plaque and saliva samples werecollected and bacterial DNA extracted, which subjected to PCR analyses. Using the T-Acloning method to construct the standards of S.mutans ATCC25175,S.sobrinusATCC6715and Uni for real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction, the data werestatistically analyzed by SPSS17.0software package. Results:The quantity of S.sobrinus in plaque and saliva of Uyghur children with highdmft was higher than that of HAN people, while there is no significant difference in thequantity of S.mutans.The quantity of S.mutans and S.sobrinus in plaque of Uyghur andHAN children with high dmft was higher than that in caries-free children. Conclusions:These results indicate that collected the dental plaque and saliva samplesare more effective to determine the presence of the cariogenic bacteria. And Uyghurpreschool children harboring S.sobrinus have a significantly high incidence of dentalcaries.
