Objective:To explore the changes of serum of activin A(ACTA) and transforming growthfactor beta-1(TGF-β1) and study the correlation of ACTA and TGF-β1in patients withacute exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(AECOPD) before and aftertreatment,as well as analyze ACTAand TGF-β1correlation with FEVl%before treatment,so that they can be used to provide clinical guidance in condition assessment and efficacy forthe patient with COPD.Methods:The serum levels of ACTA and TGF-β1in the40patients with AECOPD beforeand after treatment and40normal controls were determined by enzyme linkedimmunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Meanwhile, the FEVl%and FEV1/FVC weremeasured with lung function apparatus before treatment.Results:(1) In the COPD group, the serum levels of ACTA and TGF-β1before treatmentare higher than those in the control group, and the differences are significant(P<0.01).Theserum levels of ACTA and TGF-β1after treatment are lower than those before treatment, and the differences are significant(P<0.01, P<0.05). The serum levels ofACTAand TGF-β1after treatment are higher than those in the control group, but the differences are notstatistically significant.(2) In the very severe COPD group before treatment, the serum levelsof ACTA (32.54±3.92) ng/ml are higher than the severe group (31.84±2.78) ng/ml and themild to moderate group (30.90±4.93) ng/ml, but any difference is not statisticallysignificant (P>0.05). In the very severe COPD group, the serum levels of TGF-β1(724.29±93.26) ng/L are higher than the severe group (711.91±114.37) ng/L and the mild to moderate group (615.65±191.14) ng/L, and any difference between the two group is notstatistically significant (P>0.05).(3) No matter before and after treatment, the serum levelsof ACTA and TGF-β1have good positive correlation in the COPD group. The correlationcoefficient before treatment is greater than that after treatment. The serum levels of ACTAand TGF-β1in COPD group before treatment are negatively correlated with FEVl%.Conclusion:(1)The serum levels of ACTA and TGF-β1are significantly increased, and itprompts that they may be associated with acute inflammatory of body in patients withAECOPD, and they may be a reflection factor of COPD in acute exacerbation.(2)The serumlevels of ACTA and TGF-β1in patients with AECOPD after treatment were significantlylower than those before treatment, and there has a good positive correlation between them, suggesting that they can be used as a sensitive indicator to evaluate the therapeuticeffect.(3)In patients ofAECOPD, the serum levels ofACTAand TGF-β1before treatmentare significantly increased and are negatively correlated with FEVl%, indicating that theconcentration of ACTA and TGF-β1are association with airway inflammation and airwayremodeling in patients with COPD and can indirectly affect ventilatory function. PromptingthatACTAand TGF-beta1are involved in the pathophysiology of COPD.
