Objective To study the effect of lanthanum and cerium on the model ofosteoporosis,so as to determine whether the two kinds of rare earth elements havetherapeutic effect and the mechanism of action for the osteoporosis. MethodExperiments were executed in two stages using male SD rates. To determine whether therare earth element can cause normal rats with osteoporosis in the first stage experiment,96rats were randomly divided into8groups by weight, there are12rats in each group, control groups, retinoic acid lavage group (75mg/kg*d), lanthanum nitrate high doselavage group (100mg/kg*d), medium dose lavage group (50mg/kg*d), lavage groupwith low dose (25mg/kg*d), high dose lavage group (86mg/kg*d) of cerium chloride, lavage group with medium dose (43mg/kg*d), lavage group with low dose(21mg/kg*d). The eight groups were fed normally; the osteoporosis model was established afteradministrated15days by gastric perfusion using the retinoic acid in model group. Afterfour weeks, control group rates were fed normally, and the rates in other six groups wereperfused into gastric using different does of lanthanum nitrate and cerium chloride, bloodfrom celiac artery was taked to test blood Ca, P, AKP and BGP, and the bone mineraldensity measured from the same side of the lower limbs (left) in all rats.(2) To confirmthe therapeutic effect of rare earth elements and its citric acid compounds on osteoporosisin second stage. The group is divided as follows: lanthanum nitrate intervention group, cerium chloride intervention group, citric acid lanthanum intervention group, citric acidcerium intervention group, gallium chloride intervention group, retinoic acid group, blankcontrol group. To establish osteoporosis model using retinoic acid in eight groups andintervente by the above senven kinsof drugs in seven groups. The bone mineral densityand blood Ca, P, AKP, BGP were measured according to the above indicators after4weeks drug intervention on the basis of osteoporosis model. Results The blood Ca, P,AKP, BGP, bone mineral density in lanthanum nitrate intervention group, lanthanumcitrate intervention group, cerium chloride intervention group and cerium citrateintervention group are all compared with osteoporosis model. In the end, by statisticalanalysis of groups, P<0.05.Conclusions Lanthanum nitrate, citric acid lanthanum, ceriumchloride and citric acid cerium can play a therapeutic role in osteoporosis model.
